Would he not be more likely to say, \u201cGet my supper laid; make yourself tidy and wait on me while I eat and drink. You can eat and drink yourself afterwards\u201d? Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told? And his flesh became clean once more like the flesh of a little child.<BR>\nReturning to Elisha with his whole escort, he went in and stood before him. \u2018Now I know\u2019 he said \u2018that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. Now, please, accept a present from your servant.\u2019<BR>\nBut Elisha replied, \u2018As the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will accept nothing.\u2019 Naaman pressed him to accept, but he refused.<BR>\nThen Naaman said, \u2018Since your answer is \u201cNo,\u201d allow your servant to be given as much earth as two mules may carry, because your servant will no longer offer holocaust or sacrifice to any god except the Lord.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n<p><font color='#0033CC'><b>\nPsalm: 97(98):1-4<\/font color><BR><\/b>\n\nSing a new song to the Lord<BR>\nfor he has worked wonders.<BR>\nHis right hand and his holy arm<BR>\nhave brought salvation.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Lord has made known his salvation;<BR>\nhas shown his justice to the nations.<BR>\nHe has remembered his truth and love<BR>\nfor the house of Israel.<\/p>\n\n<p>All the ends of the earth have seen<BR>\nthe salvation of our God.<BR>\nShout to the Lord, all the earth,<BR>\nring out your joy.<\/p>\n\n<p><font color='#0033CC'><b>\nA reading from the Second Letter of St Paul to Timothy 2:8-13<\/font color><BR><\/b>\n\n<i>If we hold firm then we shall reign with Christ<\/i><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-align: justify;'>Remember the Good News that I carry, \u2018Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David\u2019; it is on account of this that I have my own hardships to bear, even to being chained like a criminal \u2013 but they cannot chain up God\u2019s news. So I bear it all for the sake of those who are chosen, so that in the end they may have the salvation that is in Christ Jesus and the eternal glory that comes with it.<BR>\n    Here is a saying that you can rely on:<\/p>\n\n<p>If we have died with him, then we shall live with him.<BR>\nIf we hold firm, then we shall reign with him.<BR>\nIf we disown him, then he will disown us.<BR>\nWe may be unfaithful, but he is always faithful,<BR>\nfor he cannot disown his own self.<\/p>\n\n<p><font color='#0033CC'><b>\nA reading from the Gospel of St Luke 17:11-19<\/font color><BR><\/b>\n\n<i>No-one has come back to praise God, only this foreigner<\/i><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-align: justify;'>On the way to Jerusalem Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him. They stood some way off and called to him, \u2018Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.\u2019 When he saw them he said, \u2018Go and show yourselves to the priests.\u2019 Now as they were going away they were cleansed. Finding himself cured, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice and threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. This made Jesus say, \u2018Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.\u2019 And he said to the man, \u2018Stand up and go on your way. Moses said to Joshua, \u2018Pick out men for yourself, and tomorrow morning march out to engage Amalek. I, meanwhile, will stand on the hilltop, the staff of God in my hand.\u2019 Joshua did as Moses told him and marched out to engage Amalek, while Moses and Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill. As long as Moses kept his arms raised, Israel had the advantage; when he let his arms fall, the advantage went to Amalek. But Moses\u2019 arms grew heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him and on this he sat, Aaron and Hur supporting his arms, one on one side, one on the other; and his arms remained firm till sunset. With the edge of the sword Joshua cut down Amalek and his people.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><font color='#0033CC'><b>\nPsalm: 120(121)<\/font color><BR><\/b>\n\nI lift up my eyes to the mountains;<BR>\nfrom where shall come my help?<BR>\nMy help shall come from the Lord<BR>\nwho made heaven and earth.<\/p>\n\n<p>May he never allow you to stumble!<BR>\nLet him sleep not, your guard.<BR>\nNo, he sleeps not nor slumbers,<BR>\nIsrael\u2019s guard.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Lord is your guard and your shade;<BR>\nat your right side he stands.<BR>\nBy day the sun shall not smite you<BR>\nnor the moon in the night.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Lord will guard you from evil,<BR>\nhe will guard your soul.<BR>\nThe Lord will guard your going and coming<BR>\nboth now and for ever.<\/p>\n\n<p><font color='#0033CC'><b>\nA reading from the Second Letter of St Paul to Timothy 3:14-4:2<\/font color><BR><\/b>\n\n<i>The man who is dedicated to God becomes fully equipped and ready for any good work<\/i><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-align: justify;'>My advice is that, first of all, there should be prayers offered for everyone \u2013 petitions, intercessions and thanksgiving \u2013 and especially for kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to live religious and reverent lives in peace and quiet. To do this is right, and will please God our saviour: he wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. For there is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and mankind, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for them all. He is the evidence of this, sent at the appointed time, and I have been named a herald and apostle of it and \u2013 I am telling the truth and no lie \u2013 a teacher of the faith and the truth to the pagans.<BR>\nIn every place, then, I want the men to lift their hands up reverently in prayer, with no anger or argument.<\/p>\n\n<p><font color='#0033CC'><b>\nA reading from the Gospel of St Luke 18:1-8<\/font color><BR><\/b>\n\n<i>The parable of the unjust judge<\/i><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-align: justify;'>Jesus told his disciples a parable about the need to pray continually and never lose heart. \u2018There was a judge in a certain town\u2019 he said \u2018who had neither fear of God nor respect for man. In the same town there was a widow who kept on coming to him and saying, \u201cI want justice from you against my enemy!\u201d For a long time he refused, but at last he said to himself, \u201cMaybe I have neither fear of God nor respect for man, but since she keeps pestering me I must give this widow her just rights, or she will persist in coming and worry me to death.\u201d\u2019<BR>\nAnd the Lord said \u2018You notice what the unjust judge has to say? Now will not God see justice done to his chosen who cry to him day and night even when he delays to help them? I promise you, he will see justice done to them, and done speedily. I have fought the good fight to the end; I have run the race to the finish; I have kept the faith; all there is to come now is the crown of righteousness reserved for me, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that Day; and not only to me but to all those who have longed for his Appearing.<BR>\nThe first time I had to present my defence, there was not a single witness to support me. Every one of them deserted me \u2013 may they not be held accountable for it. But the Lord stood by me and gave me power, so that through me the whole message might be proclaimed for all the pagans to hear; and so I was rescued from the lion\u2019s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from all evil attempts on me, and bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.<\/p>\n\n<p><font color='#0033CC'><b>\nA reading from the Gospel of St Luke 18:9-14<\/font color><BR><\/b>\n\n<i>The tax collector, not the Pharisee, went home justified.<\/i><\/p>\n\n<p style='text-align: justify;'>Jesus spoke the following parable to some people who prided themselves on being virtuous and despised everyone else: \u2018Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself, \u201cI thank you, God, that I am not grasping, unjust, adulterous like the rest of mankind, and particularly that I am not like this tax collector here. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes on all I get.\u201d The tax collector stood some distance away, not daring even to raise his eyes to heaven; but he beat his breast and said, \u201cGod, be merciful to me, a sinner.\u201d This man, I tell you, went home again at rights with God; the other did not.
