New Testament Canticles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Prayerfulness is deeply a part of you: in body, mind and spirit.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the New Testament there are many beautiful texts that are read as Canticles or songs, and recited as part of daily prayer and worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Testament Canticles have inspired many Christian songs and hymns down the ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are a selection of the Canticles (Jerusalem Bible texts):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the Gospels:<\/strong><\/font color><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beatitudes: Matthew 5:3-10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nHow happy are the poor in spirit;
\ntheirs is the kingdom of heaven.

\nHappy the gentle:
\nthey shall have the earth for their heritage.

\nHappy those who mourn:
\nthey shall be comforted.

\nHappy those who hunger and thirst for what is right:
\nthey shall be satisfied.

\nHappy the merciful:
\nthey shall have mercy shown them.

\nHappy the pure in heart:
\nthey shall see God.

\nHappy the peacemakers:
\nthey shall be called sons of God.

\nHappy those who are persecuted in the cause of right:
\ntheirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah): Luke 1:68-79<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Recited with Morning Prayer)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nBlessed be the Lord, the God of Israel
\nfor he has visited his people, he has come to their rescue

\n\nand he has raised up for us a power for salvation
\nin the House of his servant David,
\neven as he proclaimed,
\nby the mouth of his holy prophets from ancient times,

\n\nthat he would save us from our enemies
\nand from the hands of all who hate us.
\nThus he shows mercy to our ancestors,
\nthus he remembers his holy covenant,

\n\nthe oath he swore to our father Abraham
\nthat he would grant us, free from fear,
\nto be delivered from the hands of our enemies,
\nto serve him in holiness and virtue
\nin his presence, all our days.

The Magnificat (The Song of Mary): Luke 1:46-55<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nand my spirit exults in God my saviour;
\nbecause he has looked upon his lowly handmaid.
\nYes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed,

\n\nfor the Almighty has done great things for me.
\nHoly is his name,
\nand his mercy reaches from age to age
\nfor those who fear him.

\n\nHe has shown the power of his arm,
\nhe has routed the proud of heart.
\nHe has pulled down princes from their thrones

\nyou can let your servant
\ngo in peace, just as you promised;

\n\nbecause my eyes have seen the salvation
\nwhich you have prepared for all the nations to see,

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Song of Divine Love: 1 Corinthians 13:4-13<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nLove is always patient and kind;
\nit is never jealous;
\nlove is never boastful or conceited;
\nit is never rude or selfish;

\n\nit does not take offense,
\nand is not resentful.
\nLove takes no pleasure in other people\u2019s sins
\nbut delights in the truth;

\n\nit is always ready to excuse, to trust,
\nto hope, and to endure whatever comes.

\n\nLove does not come to an end.
\nBut if there are gifts of prophecy,
\nthe time will come when they must fail;
\nor the gift of languages, it will not continue for ever;
\nand knowledge-for this, too,
\nthe time will come when it must fail.

\n\nFor our knowledge is imperfect
\nand our prophesying is imperfect;
\nbut once perfection comes,
\nall imperfect things will disappear.

\n\nWhen I was a child, I used to talk like a child,
\nand think like a child, and argue like a child,
\nbut now I am a man,
\nall childish ways are put behind me.

\n\nNow we are seeing a dim reflection in a mirror;
\nbut then we shall be seeing face to face.
\n\nThe knowledge that I have now is imperfect;
\nbut then I shall know as fully as I am known.

\n\nIn short, there are three things that last:
\nfaith, hope and love;
\nand the greatest of these is love.

A Song of God\u2019s Grace: Ephesians 1:3-10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nBlessed be God the Father
\nof our Lord Jesus Christ,

\nwith all the spiritual blessings of heaven in Christ.

\n\nBefore the world was made,
\nhe chose us,
\nchose us in Christ,
\nto be holy and spotless,

\n\nand to live through love in his presence,
\ndetermining that we should become
\nhis adopted sons, through Jesus Christ
\nfor his own kind purposes,

\n\nto make us praise the glory of his grace,
\nhis free gift to us in the Beloved,
\nin whom, through his blood,

The Song of Christ\u2019s Glory: Philippians 2:5-11<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIn your minds you must be the same as Christ Jesus:

\n\nHis state was divine,
\nyet he did not cling
\nto his equality with God

\n\nbut emptied himself
\nto assume the condition of a slave,
\nand became as men are;

\n\nand being as all men are,
\nhe was humbler yet,
\neven to accepting death,
\ndeath on a cross.

\n\nBut God raised him high
\nand gave him the name
\nwhich is above all other names

\n\nso that all beings
\nin the heavens, on earth and in the underworld,
\nshould bend the knee at the name of Jesus

\n\nand that every tongue should acclaim
\nJesus Christ as Lord,
\nto the glory of God the Father.

A Song of Redemption: Colossians 1:13-18a, 19, 20a<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThanking the Father

\nto inherit the light.

\n\nBecause that is what he has done:
\nhe has taken us out of the power of darkness
\nand created a place for us
\nin the kingdom of the Son that he loves,
\nand in him, we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins.

\n\nHe is the image of the unseen God
\nand the first-born of all creation,
\nfor in him were created
\nall things in heaven and on earth:
\neverything visible and everything invisible.

\n\n(All) things were created
\nthrough him and for him.
\nBefore anything was created,
\nhe existed,
\nand he holds all things in unity.

\n\nNow the Church is his body,
\nhe is its head.
\nAs he is the Beginning,
\nhe was first to be born from the dead,
\nso that he should be first in every way;

\nand all things to be reconciled

A Song of Christ the Servant: 1 Peter 2:21b-25<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nChrist suffered for you

\nfor you to follow the way he took.

\nand there had been no perjury in his mouth.
\nHe was insulted
\nand did not retaliate with insults;

\n\nwhen he was tortured
\nhe made no threats
\nbut he put his trust in the righteous judge.
\n\nHe was bearing our faults
\nin his own body on the cross,
\nso that we might die to our faults
\nand live for holiness;
\n\nthrough his wounds you have been healed.

A Song of Praise: Revelation 4:11; 5:9b, 10, 12<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Canticle is also known as Glory and Honour<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nYou are our Lord and our God,
\nyou are worthy of glory and honour and power,

\n\nbecause you made all the universe
\nand it was only by your will that everything was made and exists.

\n\nYou are worthy to take the scroll
\nand break the seals of it,
\nbecause you were sacrificed, and with your blood
\nyou bought men for God
\nof every race, language, people and nation

\n\nand made them a line of kings and priests,
\nto serve our God and to rule the world.

\n\nThe Lamb that was sacrificed
\nis worthy to be given power, riches,
\nwisdom, strength,
\nhonour, glory and blessing.

A Song of the Redeemed: Revelation 7:9, 10, 14b-17<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nAfter that I saw a huge number,
\nimpossible to count, of people
\nfrom every nation,
\nrace, tribe and language;

\n\nthey were standing in front of the throne
\nand in front of the Lamb,
\ndressed in white robes
\nand holding palms in their hands.
\nThey shouted aloud,

\n\n\u201cVictory to our God,
\nwho sits on the throne,
\nand to the Lamb!\u201d

\n\nthey now stand in front of God’s throne
\nand serve him day and night in his sanctuary;
\nand the One who sits on the throne will
\nspread his tent over them.

\n\nThey will never hunger or thirst again;
\nneither the sun nor scorch? wind will ever plague them,
\nbecause the Lamb who is at the throne
\nwill be their shepherd
\nand will lead them to springs of living water;
\nand God will wipe away all tears from their eyes.
