The Rosary: The Luminous Mysteries

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Holding the cross say and the first chain of beads:
The Apostle’s Creed
    I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
    Creator of Heaven and earth;
    and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord,
    who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
    born of the Virgin Mary,
    suffered under Pontius Pilate,
    was crucified, died, and was buried.
    He descended into Hell,
    on the third day He arose again from the dead.
    He ascended into Heaven,
    and is seated at the right hand of
    God the Father Almighty;
    from there He will come to judge
    the living and the dead.
    I believe in the Holy Spirit,
    the holy Catholic Church,
    the communion of saints,
    the forgiveness of sins,
    the resurrection of the body,
    and the life everlasting. Amen.

Holding the five beads, say:
    Our Father
    Hail Mary, three times
    Glory be…

Name the Mysteries: The Luminous Mysteries
  • When praying alone say the whole Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be…
  • When the Rosary is said in a group and lead by one member, it is customary for the lead to say the first half of the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory be, and the members say the second half in the First, Third and Fifth mysteries, and members say the first half of the prayers in the Second and Fourth mysteries.
  • The Scripture readings are optional – for when more time is taken to reflect on each moment from Jesus’ life.

  • Name each mystery
    First Luminous Mystery: The Baptism of Christ in the Jordan
      Optional: Matthew 3:16-17
      As soon as Jesus was baptised he came up from the water, and suddenly the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. And a voice spoke from heaven, “This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him.”
      Our Father
      Lead:     Our Father, who art in heaven
                    hallowed be thy name.
                    Thy kingdom come.
                    Thy will be done on earth,
                    as it is in heaven.
      Others:     Give us this day our daily bread;
                    and forgive us our trespasses,
                    as we forgive those who trespass against us;
                    and lead us not into temptation,
                    but deliver us from evil.

      Hail Mary ten times
      Lead:     Hail Mary, full of grace,
                    the Lord is with thee.
                    Blessed art thou among women,
                    and blessed us the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
      Others:     Holy Mary, Mother of God,
                    pray for us sinners now
                    and at the hour of our death. Amen.

      Glory Be…
      Lead:     Glory be to the Father,
                    and to the Son,
                    and to the Holy Spirit,
      Others:     as it was in the beginning,
                    is now, and ever shall be,
                    world without end. Amen.

      Optional:
      The Fatima Prayer: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell.
      Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. Amen.
    Second Luminous mystery: The Wedding Feast at Cana
      Our Father / Hail Mary, ten times / Glory be…
      Optional: The Fatima Prayer
      Optional: John 2:1-5
      Three days later there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited. When they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the wedding was all finished, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” Jesus said, “Woman, why turn to me? My hour has not come yet.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
    Third Luminous mystery: Jesus’ Proclamation of the Coming of the Kingdom of God
      Our Father / Hail Mary, ten times / Glory be…
      Optional: The Fatima Prayer
      Optional: Mark 1:15
      “The time has come,” he said, “and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News.”
    Fourth Luminous mystery: The Transfiguration
      Our Father / Hail Mary, ten times / Glory be…
      Optional: The Fatima Prayer
      Optional: Matthew 17:1-2
      Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone. There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light.
    Fifth Luminous mystery: The Institution of the Eucharist
      Our Father / Hail Mary, ten times / Glory be…
      Optional: The Fatima Prayer
      Optional: Matthew 26:26

      Now as they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it to the disciples. “Take it and eat”; he said, “this is my body.”
    Complete the Rosary with the Hail, Holy Queen and Concluding Prayer

    The Hail Holy Queen
        Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
        our life, our sweetness and our hope,
        to thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
        to thee do we send up our sighs,
        mourning and weeping in this vale of tears;
        turn, then, most gracious Advocate,
        thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile,
        show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
        O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!

    Lead:    Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,
    Others:    that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

    Concluding Prayer
        Let us pray.
        O God, whose only begotten Son,
        by his life, death, and resurrection,
        has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life,
        grant, we beseech thee,
        that by meditating on these mysteries
        of the most holy Rosary
        of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
        we may imitate what they contain,
        and obtain what they promise,
        through the same Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

    In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
